Lacanau Océan

Lacanau Océan is a lively beach resort 13 kms away. Famous for surf and the professional surf championshipst that take place there each year in August.
See http://www.lacanau-pro.com/.
The beach is beautiful and the surf can be big.
There is a surf school and you can hire boards easily in the town. Beware of swimming out of your depth as the offshore currents are strong. The town beach is keenly patrolled by lifeguards.
The beach extends 50 km either side of Lacanau but there are very few easy access points. However there are quiet spots which involve a walk in through the pine forest and over sand dunes where there will be few other people. One favourite is called 'LAlexandre, a few kms north of Lacanau Ocean.
The best way to travel to the beach is by bicycle. It is 13 km along the excellent network of bicyle tracks that run through the forest.
See the bicycle network here:

There is also a very cheap shuttle bus service (Navette) between Lacanau Lake and Lacanau Ocean. You can buy a weekly pass.

Lacanau Ville

Lacanau Ville is a pleasant place, little more than a big village, near the Lac de Lacanau, the second biggest in France and bang in the middle of a vast pine forest. The Avenue du Lac runs between the lake and the town and is about ten minutes walk from each.

The lake has pleasant sandy beaches which are very safe for young people as the water shelves very slowly in most places. The eastern side of the lake is shallow and is therefore excellent for windsurfing and kite-surfing. It is also very unspoilt with the vast majority of the shoreline made up of forest. It is a good place for sailing and there are nice islands to picnic on. More about Lacanau here:

There is also a local riding school who will take you on rides through the forest and along the shoreline.
There is golf at the Golf de Lacanau.
